Course overview

This course provides mental health and social work professionals with a comprehensive overview of human trafficking as a critical issue in public health, social justice, and patient safety. Participants will gain a working understanding of the federal legislation that governs human trafficking in the United States 18 U.S. Code, Chapter 77: Peonage, Slavery, and Trafficking in Persons and the roles that healthcare providers play in prevention, identification, and response. The course integrates current research, clinical practice guidelines, and validated assessment tools to help learners recognize indicators of trafficking across healthcare settings. Participants will explore the physical, psychological, and social impacts of trafficking on victims and will learn how to apply trauma-informed, survivor-centered care to promote safety, trust, and healing. Practical instruction will also be provided on mandatory reporting requirements, interprofessional collaboration, and referral to public and private social service resources. By completing this course, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to identify victims, intervene appropriately, and connect individuals with the services and legal protections to which they are entitled.
