Course overview

Nursing is in a unique position to identify and help break the cycled of domestic violence. This course focuses on the cycle of violence, as well as the signs, symptoms, and intervention strategies to break the cycle of domestic violence and provide care for the victims of abuse. This course prepares Florida nurses to identify, assess, and intervene with individuals who may be victims of domestic violence. This course meets Florida mandatory education requirements. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Define the five main categories of intimate partner violence; 2.Explain why health care workers may use the term “survivor,” instead of “patient” or “victim,” to refer to the individual experiencing intimate partner violence; 3.Identify negative health behaviors that are commonly associated with intimate partner violence. 4.List risk factors for victimization and perpetration; and 5.Discuss the cycle of violence and how healthcare providers can attempt to break the cycle.
