Course Description: This course is based on multiple documents that together provide a comprehensive picture of spousal and partner abuse. The course covers assessment, detection and intervention strategies for spousal and partner abuse. It also includes community resources, cultural factors and same gender abuse dynamics. The first part of this course covers intimate partner abuse and relationship violence in heterosexual and homosexual couples. It provides an overview of abusive relationships by describing characteristic behaviors and dynamics. The material outlines the risk factors, vulnerability markers, and consequences associated with intimate partner violence. The course also describes treatment and prevention methods for abusive relationships. Additional information is provided on the legal, ethical, and forensic issues related to relationship violence. The next part of this course gives the reader an understanding of factors that are associated with an increased risk of being a victim of physical and or sexual assault. Evidence of what factors matter in predicting future victimization is outlined in detail. This course also provides the reader with research data on the factors that contribute to being a perpetrator of violence against women. The course then includes a publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) that focuses on violence against women from a global and cultural perspective. It provides an overview of intimate partner violence by describing characteristic behaviors, dynamics, and response patterns. Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and societal risk factors and consequences associated with intimate partner violence are outlined. Additional information is provided on the research challenges related to measuring violence and the prevalence of intimate partner violence in different countries. The course concludes with information for safety planning and incidence and community resources specific to the state of California.
