Course overview

Approximately 90 million American adults have been diagnosed with a vestibular disorder. Physical and occupational therapists are key members of the evaluation and rehabilitation team for patients with motion intolerance or imbalance disorders. Vestibular disorders can cause dizziness, imbalance, and subsequent risk of falling, which greatly limits mobility, activity function, and quality of life. Properly utilizing vestibular rehabilitation, therapists can guide a patient through the course of their dysfunction, assist them in recovery, and help them to get back to their previous level of function. To effectively assess and treat these clients, therapists must have a solid understanding of the anatomy, structure, and function of the vestibular system and utilize evidence-based assessment, treatment and outcome measures in their treatment planning and documentation. This course is part of a three-part course series on vestibular rehabilitation and will focus on review and analysis of relevant topics including easy to understand anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system and assessment of vestibular disorders. Participants will review patient videos and case studies with an emphasis on utilizing current evidence based research to guide objective assessments. This course is applicable to all levels of vestibular experience. Participants will leave with a new level of understanding and expanding the clinical skills of proper vestibular rehabilitation.
