Course overview

The CDC reports that the annual financial toll of trauma in the U.S. is $42 trillion with estimates that 90% of people have experienced significant trauma at least once in their lives. Strong longitudinal research has confirmed that trauma impacts individuals on multiple levels and has been linked to the most common chronic physical and mental/emotional diseases. Unfortunately, many post-traumatic symptoms are mis-identified, misunderstood, and mistreated by well-meaning health care professionals resulting in further re-traumatization. This unintended, yet still hurtful client experience results in loss of trust, engagement, and ultimately meaningful client outcomes. This interactive course will teach attendees how to immediately integrate the four core principles of trauma-sensitive care into both their work environments and client programs. This training will reveal the hidden impacts of trauma on the brain and autonomic nervous system, affecting a person's attention, arousal, and emotions while also outlining holistic, trauma-sensitive treatment approaches that can be used effectively to optimize client safety and empowered functional outcomes. Following this course, clinicians will have the knowledge to quickly implement strategies that create trauma-sensitive environments, stabilize nervous system arousal, develop positive psychosocial engagement, and minimize client re-traumatization.
