Course overview

This course reviews 2 current research articles that offer foundational information on Primary Anterior Shoulder Dislocation in athletes and recommended treatment management, including evaluation for returning to sports. It includes epidemiology, risk factors, physical exam findings, diagnostic imaging and review of concurrent injuries associated with anterior shoulder dislocations. This course also provides a Clinical Application in the form of a Case Scenario that reviews and applies information on a recently studied Rehab Protocol for improving GH joint strength through the use of elastic bands and resistive free-weight exercises.

COURSE GOALS

Upon completion of this course, the Therapist will:

Be able to IDENTIFY patients at risk for anterior shoulder dislocation and recurrent shoulder dislocation based on epidemiology and risk factors, and

Be able to ANALYZE and INTERPRET the clinical presentation and management of acute anterior shoulder dislocation and the associated complications, and

CLINICAL APPLICATION: ANALYZE and APPLY recommendations on evaluation, treatment & progression of a rehabilitation protocol aimed at return-to-sports activity.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Review Epidemiology facts about anterior shoulder dislocations.
  2. Identify known RISK FACTORS for the development of acute anterior shoulder dislocation and recurrent shoulder dislocation.
  3. Recognize typical clinical presentation of acute Anterior Shoulder Dislocation.
  4. Understand the usefulness of different imaging studies in the diagnosis of anterior shoulder dislocation and the accepted recommendations of when to use imaging.
  5. Review injuries to bone, vascular, nerve & muscle tissue associated with anterior dislocation.
  6. Learn key Physical Exam findings of associated complications of acute anterior shoulder dislocation.
  7. Review principles of the Rehab Program based on progressive exercise with elastic bands & free-weights outlined in Article #9 for progression from acute injury to return-to-sports.
  8. Understand parameters to evaluate for determination of patient readiness to return to sports.
  9. CLINICAL APPLICATION: ANALYZE a Clinical Case Scenario and APPLY Module 8 concepts of treatment & progression of the rehab protocol as presented in Article #9.
