Course overview

The population of older adults in the United States continues to grow, but many of those adults are staying active well into their 80s. Studies consistently indicate that an active lifestyle is key in slowing seemingly normal age-related changes. Proper exercise prescription is an essential role of the physical and occupational therapist in order to see strength gains that will play a positive impact on function. This course will provide easy-to-use assessment and treatment strategies designed to assist the therapist and assistant in designing and implementing a strength-focused exercise program for the older adult. Through real-world case examples and analysis of current research, participants will learn when patients require therapeutic intervention and what those interventions should be. Clinicians will return to their place of practice understanding the importance of gait speed, how strength deficits can negatively affect it, and methods to improve strength in older adults.
