Course overview

Prescribing psychotropic medications is widespread in facilities, as well as for community-dwelling older adults. The goal of these drugs is to promote the highest quality of life and well-being. The use of psychotropic medications is needed to reach those goals at times. But there are many instances in which these drugs are used inappropriately. This type of use can lead to a decrease in the quality of life. This also proves to be a poor quality of care point. Providers should carefully watch the use of these drugs. This is especially true in people with dementia. In this course, you will learn about the types of psychotropic medications, the challenges of these drugs, and alternative drug interventions to successfully reduce the use of these drugs. The goal of this course is to teach administrators and non-licensed direct care workers in post-acute care settings about antipsychotics.
