Course overview

Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms such as fungi, viruses and bacteria. Many organisms live inside and on our bodies. They are harmless and can be helpful. However, there are times when these organisms can cause illness. Some infectious diseases can be passed from individual to individual, while others can be transmitted by insects and animals. Still others may enter the body from the food that we eat and from contaminated water. Exposure to toxins is another route of entry. The symptoms may vary from individual to individual and may also depend on the route of exposure. One thing is for sure, maintaining a balanced immune system is key to prevention and control of good health.
