Course overview

Joint replacement surgeries have become an increasingly popular intervention for active individuals limited by symptoms of osteoarthritis, including pain, stiffness, restricted mobility, and loss of motion. Rehabilitation programs focus on improving strength, range of motion, balance, and functional mobility, however there can be a great disparity between clinical approaches, which may affect patient outcomes. Furthermore, insurance companies and federally funded programs continue to demand objective and functional documentation to demonstrate progress and support continued care. A multimodal approach consisting of manual therapy, functional mobility, and therapeutic exercise will allow the patient to appropriately progress through a post-operative, rehabilitation protocol, achieve goals for optimal discharge and transition to an independent home exercise program. This one-day workshop will provide you with evidence-based rationale for assessment and treatment techniques for post-surgical patients. Through didactic presentation, video, case study discussion, and hands-on demonstration, you will feel confident in your expanded skills in manual therapy and exercise prescription to influence muscle recruitment, tissue healing, and pain inhibition, all to facilitate improved functional mobility. You will be given multiple examples of protocol strategies and goals for progression from each stage of healing. Above all, you will be able to return to the clinic and incorporate new treatment skills into your existing expertise in rehabilitation following joint replacement surgery.
