Course overview

Technologists/clinical laboratory scientists and medical directors are familiar with antibodies to the common blood group antigens. But what about an antibody to an antigen not indicated on the antibody identification panel sheets? Antibodies to these antigens are relatively uncommon. With >300 known blood group antigens, identification and remembering their significance in transfusion is challenging. This program will review the serologic characteristics of antigens and antibodies to antigens in the Colton, Dombrock, Diego, Cartwright, and Wright blood group systems as well as Vel. Antigen frequency will be covered as well as the antibodies produced and their significance in transfusion. The process for providing blood for patients with these antibodies will be discussed.
