Dementia is now being referred to as an "epidemic," and it is becoming increasingly more challenging to provide appropriate services that benefit the individual and maximize cognitive and functional outcomes. We are continually being swept into a flurry of daunting tasks to teach the demented patient skills that are hard to come by, including locking wheelchair brakes for safety, drinking liquids to prevent dehydration, and increase functional independence in toileting.
