Course overview

CEU Course Description As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, it is essential that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide inclusive and sensitive care to all patients, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ). Cultural competence is crucial in providing effective healthcare services and building trusting relationships with patients from diverse backgrounds from oneself as a provider. In the case of LGBTQ individuals, like other marginalized populations, the lack of cultural competence among healthcare professionals can result in healthcare disparities and negative health outcomes. Through this course, physical therapists and assistants will gain a deeper understanding of the LGBTQ community, their unique healthcare needs, appropriate communication strategies, reasons for seeking physical therapy care, and resources to refer to for support. CEU Course Objectives Review methods to provide patient-centered and inclusive care to those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Summarize common reasons that the LGBTQ+ community seeks physical therapy. Identify community and support groups that the LGTBQ+ community may benefit from being referred to by a physical therapist. Review the background of LGBTQ+ rights and marginalization and understand appropriate language and communication strategies that are appropriate in addressing individuals
