Course overview

As has been identified over the last several years, jails and prisons have become the largest provider of mental health care across America. Given the limitation of resources in healthcare and public safety, stabilizing the mental health of incarcerated individuals has not always been a priority. To effectively address and meet the needs of this underserved population, strategies must be developed to balance the community's expectations and the reality of what is provided within a correctional facility. With the implementation of new strategies in the community and jail, collaboration can occur to address this challenge. We reviewed how a multidisciplinary strategy can effectively address the behavioral health care needs of this population.
