Implementation of Maryland's Opioid Use Disorder Examination and Treatment Act in the Baltimore City's Largest Intake Jail

Course overview

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a critical Public Health Issue in the Criminal Justice System. Opioid overdose is a leading cause of post-release fatality, estimated up to 120x community risk. Giving medications for OUD (mOUD) while incarcerate reduces post-release overdose, improves treatment retention, and reduces infectious disease spread. Maryland is the first state to require all forms of mOUD in jails. Baltimore City jail is the largest intake facility in Maryland. Despite facility, infrastructural and funding limitations, a core multidisciplinary team process mapped, protocolized and initiated sublingual and injectable buprenorphine, re-entry support using peers, health insurance enrollment and Narcan provision at release.
