Managing Dental Emergencies: Guidelines for Non-dental Correctional Staff

Most correctional institutions do not have dental staff on-site all the time. Non-dental correctional staff are the first to interact with the patient during dental emergency situations. The ability for non-dental correctional staff to identify potential dental emergencies among correctional patients and refer for immediate care is essential. The workshop presented techniques for effective and time-saving triage of common dental emergency conditions. The presentation reviewed dental conditions, including acute oral and maxillofacial trauma, pain, swelling, infection, uncontrolled bleeding, and any other dental conditions that are likely to remain acute or worsen without intervention.
