Gunshot Wounds and Bomb Blast Injuries

Course overview

This course is designed to prepare EMS providers at all levels to respond effectively to scenes of targeted violence, such as active shooter situations, and treat patients with gunshot wounds or blast injuries. Participants will gain insight into the unique attributes of bomb blast situations and the injuries they may encounter, as well as learn about the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of blast injuries, the pathophysiology associated with blast injuries, and the management requirements of patients with blast injuries. The course also covers topics such as triage during mass casualty events, crime scene preservation, ballistics, and the mental health and well-being of EMS providers exposed to traumatic incidents. By completing this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for responding to and managing traumatic injuries caused by firearms.
