Informed consent is a communication process that involves disclosure of information by health care professionals to a competent patient is who is presumed to have the capacity to understand it and a decision by that patient based on the information received. This is usually thought of in the context of a patient's decision whether to consent to or refuse a proposed treatment, such as a surgical procedure or medical therapy.
