Course overview

This course examines a singular effective treatment for co-occurring PTSD and addiction. The authors chose to study women, as they prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder is markedly higher in women with substance abuse disorder (both alcohol abuse and drug abuse) as compared to men. Women also have a higher prevalence of PTSD due to higher rates of trauma. The random controlled trial used conditions of Seeking Safety (a version of CBT) with treatment as usual (TAU) relapse prevention training with TAU, and TAU alone with PTSD severity, alcohol severity, drug severity, number of substance free days, emotion regulation and depression.
