Course overview

The aging population is expected to double over the next 25 years as baby boomers reach age 65. This advanced level course addresses the knowledge and skills essential in caring for older adults experiencing common mental health and psychiatric problems late in life. Course Objectives: * Explain aging and mental health issues including comprehensive mental health assessment, ethnic elders, mental health promotion, and psychopharmacology. * Describe the assessment and treatment of various psychopathologies of late life, including depressive disorders, anxiety, psychoses, substance abuse, delirium, and dementia. * Discuss issues regarding family caregiving, sleep disorders, pathological gambling, elder mistreatment, end-of-life care, as well as social, health, and long-term care programs and policies.
