Discussion of the legal aspects of healthcare and advance directives, including the purpose of informed consent and the differences between the types of advance directives, including power of attorney, living will, and do-not-resuscitate. Also discusses the differences between euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, and the legal aspects of organ donation. In healthcare settings, legal and ethical dilemmas are frequently encountered, some of which may include issues related to informed consent, advance directives, physician-assisted suicide, do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders, and organ donation. It is critical that nurses know and carry out their responsibilities related to these potential dilemmas, and ensure that they are working within their scope of practice as professional nurses to avoid legal implications. This program discusses informed consent, types of advance directives, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, and organ donation, including ethical and legal implications, and nursing roles and responsibilities related to these topics.
