Ethics: An Overview of the Rules for Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Professionals

Course overview

The training will examine the laws and rules of ethics for those who are certified or licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board and/or the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (CDP) Board. The training will be an examination and comparison of the codified rules of both boards including each boards code of ethics, licensure requirements, scope of practice, and confidentiality. There will be interactive discussions of scenarios throughout the training and whether these scenarios are violations of the ethics rules of the boards. Objectives: 1. Examine all the ethics rules outlined in the current codes of ethics per the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) that apply to individuals certified/licensed by Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board [Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 475-5 Code of Ethics and Chapter 4757-6 Ethical Practice] and the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (CDP) Board [Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 4758-8 Code of Ethics for Chemical Dependency Counselors and Chapter 4758-8-02 Code of Ethics for Clinical Supervisors]. 2. Differentiate between certification/licensure requirement, scope of practice, and licensee responsibilities and supervision requirements for each of the licenses of the CSWMFT and CDP boards outlined in the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) and Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) and how operating outside of the scope of practice or without proper supervision can be an ethics violation. 3. Examine specific nuances of ethics regulations that may apply to different providers or situations that arise in a clinical or supervision setting. (Example: supervision by LPCC or LISW of a CDCA or LCDCII and behaviors that may be a violation for licensees of the CSWMFT Board but is not addressed in the OCDP Board code of ethics.)
