IMPACT OF MATERNAL DEPRESSION, STRESS, AND ANXIETY ON YOUNG CHILDREN (3 CE)

Course overview

This course provides current research into important factors that impact the developing child, specifically, maternal depression, excessive stress, and fear and anxiety. This course examines the evidence on the potentially far-reaching harmful effects on children and their families. Finally, attention is given to correcting common misconceptions and the implications for policy and programs. Learning Objectives: 1. Evaluate the implications of maternal depression on the ability of the children to learn as well as their own physical and mental health. 2. Evaluate the implications of stressful experiences early in life on the long-term consequences for a child’s learning, behavior, and both physical and mental health. 3. Evaluate the implications of exposure to persistent fear and chronic anxiety on how children learn, solve problems, and relate to others.
