Course overview
This advanced level course provides an overview of symptoms and risk factors to be considered in the assessment of perinatal mood disorders. The course outlines some of the theoretical models used to explain the origins of these disorders and discusses current therapies used in treatment including: interpersonal psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, emotionally focused psychotherapy, psychodynamic approaches, couples and family therapies, and social support and group therapies. Case examples throughout the course enhance the reader’s understanding of the core concepts. Course Objectives: * Identify the symptoms of specific types of postpartum mood disorders. * Describe the theoretical perspectives for the onset of postpartum depression. * Explain the role that motherhood plays in the development of a woman’s identity. * Discuss therapeutic models used in treating perinatal mood disorders and/or anxiety * Identify empirically supported intervention strategies to prevent stress and treat perinatal disorders in women and their families.
