Treatment of Community-acquired Pneumonia in Adults

Course overview

The American Thoracic Society/Infectious Diseases Society of America (ATS/IDSA) published updated guidelines in 2019 regarding community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Community-acquired pneumonia is classified as acquired outside of the hospital setting. With the new guidelines, both groups have accepted that there is stronger evidence in favor of using a beta-lactam/macrolide combination as standard empiric therapy for severe CAP. Recommendations on treatment strategies differ and are given for patients being treated in the outpatient setting, as well as patients being treated in the inpatient setting.
