Sleep and the Developing Brain*

Course overview

Professionals working with children and teens are keenly aware of the critical importance of sleep to a child's daily performance. But how much do we know about sleep, and its effect on brain development? Do we have the evidence to share with parents and professionals to influence changes in sleep habits? This 90-minute, view-on-demand, recorded webinar provides an overview of how sleep affects brain development and daily function, identifies key risk factors for sleep disturbance and disorders, and provides tips and resources to implement into practice immediately. The presenter provides participants with practical, manageable strategies to help families develop and maintain sound sleep hygiene habits. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) list regions of the developing brain most affected by sleep, (2) identify sleep deficits in terms of behavioral and cognitive performance, (3) state factors for poor sleep in children and teens, and (4) identify therapeutic strategies and interventions for establishing and maintaining healthy sleep habits for children and teens. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.15 CEUs, Introductory level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, OTAs, parents, other professionals, and parents.
