Course overview

There are two subspecialties of orthopedic surgeries that focus on either limb deformity correction and limb salvage and the converse - limb amputation. For limb deformity correction, these surgeries are often referred to as limb lengthening procedures which involve the use of either an intramedullary nail or an external fixator. For patients whose limbs cannot be salvaged and need to undergo amputation, traditional socket protheses can cause a multitude of issues. Osseointegration has revolutionized the way amputees move and function. This program will explore both the limb lengthening as well as osseointegration procedures and will review the various surgical techniques along with the implications for physical therapy.
