In 2021, over 100,000 fatal drug overdoses occurred in the U.S. (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2023). This loss of life continues at an alarming rate, with no indications of slowing down. Any member of the healthcare system may divert drugs. With increased access to drugs of abuse, drug diversion is a serious problem causing numerous problems for people in healthcare. According to data from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the American Nurses Association (ANA), roughly 10% of healthcare professionals engage in drug abuse behaviors (The Joint Commission [TJC], 2018). These statistics highlight the concerning prevalence of substance abuse within the healthcare workforce. It emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue to ensure the well-being of both healthcare workers and the patients they care for.
