Course overview

The first section of this course focuses on the nature and extent of depressive symptoms in clients receiving substance abuse treatment, an introduction to counseling approaches, issues related to the setting in which substance abuse counselors work, cultural concerns, and your role and responsibilities as a counselor. Additional topics include screening and assessment, treatment planning, treatment, and continuing care and treatment termination. This course also presents four representative vignettes of counseling sessions with clients with depressive symptoms and how-to descriptions of specific counseling techniques. Part two is an implementation guide for program administrators. It helps you understand the processes of organizational change and the factors that can facilitate or impede such change, and provides detailed information on how to achieve high-quality implementation of the recommendations in the first section of this course. Learning Objectives: 1. Gain knowledge of the relationship between depressive symptoms and substance abuse disorders and the impact of substances on recovery of depressive symptoms 2. Assess the risk of suicidality among clients with substance abuse 3. Gain knowledge of approaches and psychosocial interventions that are effective in treating depressive symptoms 4. Evaluate special considerations related to the cultures of your clients 5. Delineate the role of the administrator in introducing and supporting new clinical practices
