Course overview

Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative neurocognitive disease. It represents the most common cause of dementia accounting for upwards of 80% of dementia cases (Alzheimer's Association [AA], 2023). Nearly 7 million Americans have Alzheimer's (AA, 2023). In this course, you will review the clinical lens of Alzheimer's. You will then dig deeper into the two primary drug classes of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors and partial N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists, which treat both symptoms and disease progression. You will also briefly learn about secondary pharmacologic treatments for behavioral and sleep changes. Lastly, you will learn about new treatments that have come to market.
