Course Objectives: * Identify core characteristics of persons with BPD and their treatment implications. * Differentiate the fundamental treatment strategies for persons with BPD. * Recognize common elements of successful treatment for persons with BPD. * Identify BPD clients who have the best chance of benefiting from short-term therapy. * Identify therapeutic strategies that maximize effective outcomes and minimize vulnerability for BPD clients. * Discuss the motivations underlying the self-destructive behaviors of BPD clients and strategies to reduce these behaviors. * Discuss therapeutic strategies for reducing emotional arousal and dyscontrol. * Discuss appropriate medication options for BPD clients. * Identify ways to terminate therapy safely. * Differentiate treatment approaches for different classes of persons with BPD. * Identify diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis associated with (BPD) and interventions appropriate for managing their behavior. * Identify etiologic theories on the possible causes of BPD.
