HIPAA - A Practical Guide

Course overview

The HIPAA Privacy & Security standards provide a framework for understanding patient confidentiality and the protection of health information accordingly. In this module, we will look at a basic understanding of HIPAA Privacy & Security, then look at the practical applications of HIPAA as individuals within healthcare. Suggested Audience: All hospital staff, volunteers and students working within healthcare facilities including, but not limited to: physicians, providers, IT support, nursing, lab, radiology, emergency room, billing, patient access, dietary, housekeeping, and other ancillary service departments. Also EMTs/paramedics, guest services workers, therapy, activity and administration departments. Upon completion of this training, you should be able to: Explain the difference between HIPAA Privacy and HIPAA Security. Identify individuals other than the patient and relationships as defined by the Privacy Rule that a healthcare provider may discuss PHI and situations where consent may or may not be necessary. Define Protected Health Information (PHI). Recognize breaches of HIPAA. Identify and understand practical behaviors that protect Protected Health Information. Explain fines and penalties for HIPAA violations. Learning Outcomes Standard: Based upon HIPAA's standards for privacy and security of individually identifiable health information, legal guidance, and best practice protocols related to protected health information.
