Course overview
Research clearly indicates that the learning brain is unavailable unless the emotional brain is calm and focused. Yet current educational conditions inhibit proper environments for the learning brain to develop successfully. Additionally, sensory and emotional regulation are foundational building blocks for academic and social-emotional development. This 4-hour view-on-demand, recorded certification program uses current brain research on mindfulness, mindful movement, simple yoga postures and the learning brain that educational and pediatric professionals can use to coach other professionals, parents, and children simply, intuitively, and effectively. The unique blend of research and practical application has been taught to hundreds of educational professionals across the country. Participants learn a range of calming, focusing, and organizing activities while identifying optimal times and places to use them. Additionally, special attention is given to movement games and activities that can build balance, vestibular processing, sensory regulation, and core strength. Appropriate for those with any level of yoga or mindfulness training, this comprehensive and easily replicable program brings mindfulness and simple movement practices to children to enhance and support social, emotional, and academic development. The presenter is an RTY-200 (registered yoga teacher) with experience in children's yoga and training through Mindful Schools. Key Areas Addressed: (1) the learning brain and mindfulness activities for academic readiness and emotional control; (2) mindful movement and yoga postures to support sensory processing, balance; (3) core stability, and strength; (4) embedding practices into daily routines at school, home; and community, and (4), establishing ways to develop a practice you will enjoy for your own increased well-being. Participants are invited to practice at their comfort level, so the presenter recommends wearing comfortable clothing and having space to move around during the course. At the end of this program, you will be able to (1) identify the parts of the brain most affected by stress and how this impacts educational and emotional health, (2) state direct changes in the brain resulting from regular mindfulness and movement practices, (3) describe how to incorporate mindful movement activities throughout the school day or intervention session, and (4) identify yoga postures to promote balance, stability, and core strength. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.4 CEUs, Introductory level, OT Service Delivery, Foundational Knowledge and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, COTAs, and other pediatric professionals.
