Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are some of the most difficult infections to control due to their ability to go undiagnosed in asymptomatic individuals, resulting in ongoing transmission and spread. STIs that involve multi-pathogen infections, can be difficult to identify using conventional technologies, and failure to detect everything within a specimen can lead to incomplete therapy, sustained communicability, and increased susceptibility to other STIs. Recently developed multi-target molecular panels may offer new options to overcome the unique challenges in STI diagnostics. This form of diagnostic testing can reduce the time from test to treatment by using vitro nucleic acid amplification testing to simultaneously detect nucleic acid from Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis in urogenital specimens. Moreover, the non-invasive sample collection and ease of testing directly from a urine specimen poses an opportunity to help slow the spread of new sexually transmitted infections. This webinar will walk participants through the unique challenges of diagnosing and treating STIs, discuss the current diagnostic options, and provide insights into newer multi-target molecular panel approaches to diagnostic testing.
