Course overview

With the enactment of HIPAA's Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information, the responsibility to keep certain health information secure, confidential, and private became a legally enforceable responsibility of your facility and its employees. In order for your facility to be successfully compliant, all employees must know and understand their responsibilities with regards to privacy and confidentiality. Suggested audience: All hospital staff, volunteers and students working within healthcare facilities including, but not limited to: Physicians, Providers, IT Support, Nursing, Lab, Radiology, Emergency Room, Billing, Patient Access, Dietary, Housekeeping, and other Ancillary Service Departments. Also EMTs/Paramedics, Guest Services workers, Therapy, Activity and Administration departments. Upon completion of this presentation, you should be able to: Apply privacy standards brought about by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule Identify the medical record as protected and confidential information Apply the hospital's policy on patient confidentiality Recognize examples and repercussions of patient-confidentiality breaches Identify what information can be released without prior approval from the patient Learning Outcomes Standard: Based upon HIPAA's Standards for Privacy and Security of Individually Identifiable Health Information, legal guidance, and best practice protocols related to Protected Health Information.
