This course is based on the book Brief Interventions for Adolescent Alcohol and Substance Abuse. This course is Part 3 of a 4-part course and covers Chapters 10 through 14 (Chapter 10: Latino Youth, Acculturation, and Parenting; Chapter 11: Cultural Considerations and Recommendations for Implementing Brief Interventions with American Indian Adolescents; Chapter 12: Understanding and Addressing Alcohol and Substance Use in Sexual- and Gender-Minority Youth; Chapter 13: Pharmacotherapy for Adolescent Substance Misuse; and Chapter 14: Group-Based Interventions for Youth). This book and 4-part course reviews brief motivational interventions for addressing adolescent alcohol and other substance use in a range of clinical contexts. Participants will learn about the etiology and developmental context of adolescent addictive behaviors as well as effective treatment approaches. Practical strategies for intervening with diverse populations will be discussed, including strategies for college students, youth in the justice system, youth in foster care, youth with co-occurring substance abuse and psychiatric problems, LGBT+ youth, and Latino and American Indian adolescents. Additionally, recommendations for future research will be discussed.
