Course overview

Experienced practitioners who evaluate and offer client centered intervention to patients with complex carpal and distal forearm injuries face an uphill battle due to delays in receiving timely referrals, insurance authorization, pre-and-post surgical compliance, dealing with health literacy, as well as post injury complications. A recent study found that best results with complex wrist injuries are obtained when adequate and timely application of hand therapy follows skilled surgical intervention (Atilegan, et al., 2022). Life expectancy continues to be extended due to medical countermeasures and intervention; however, hand trauma is occurring with increased frequency among young adults, and this requires focused medical attention by skilled providers (Crowe, et al., 2020). When practitioners deal with complex and confined structures of the wrist, as well as the myriad of diagnoses associated with this region, they must be clear and concise with their evaluations and treatment milieus to achieve functional outcomes (Dustagheer, S., & Chojnowski, A., 2019). This course fosters increased awareness of the carpal and distal forearm region and demonstrates how to offer timely intervention while simultaneously collaborating with the transdisciplinary healthcare team. The hands-on strategies learned within this course can be directly applied to the attendees practice setting.
