IDENTIFYING AND ASSESSING SUICIDE RISK IN ADULTS

Course overview

Many mental health professsionals have concerns about the possibility of a client completing suicide over the course of treatment. This course examines different methods for assessing suicide danger in adult clients, including the protocols and models set forth by Jacobs, Rudd, Joiner, and Shea. Varied approaches to intervention are discussed as are the findings of studies on the range of clinicians' reactions to client suicides. Clinical decision making concerns and examples of documentation are presented. Course Objectives: * define suicide and suicide-related behaviors. * discuss various risk factors to assess for when working with adult clients who are suicidal. * identify the common elements, concepts, and skills of intervening with adult clients who are suicidal. * explain the process for clinical decision making and documentation with adult clients who are suicidal.
