Special Considerations When Caring for Psychiatric Patients

Course overview

This course is a high level overview of elements of care that need to be taken into consideration when caring for psychiatric patients on inpatient units. However many of these elements can also be applied to the care of patients in an outpatient program as well. Included in this course is discussion on communication barriers, communication strategies, patient rights, and the environment of care. Suggested Audience: Nursing, clinical, and ancillary staff Upon completion of this presentation, you should be able to: Identify barriers to communication between staff and patients. Identify strategies to facilitate better communication with patients. Identify safety risks in the physical environment. Display a basic understanding of patient rights.
