Course overview

ADHD can make life harder in many ways, including all those distracted and forgetful moments where its tempting to lie. This real or perceived dishonesty or even just shading of the truth can cast a long shadow in relationships including the therapeutic relationship Putting the therapist in the unhappy position of being asked to be a lie detector or arbiter of truth. In this session, well discuss why people lie, describe the different types of lies, and explain how ADHD makes lying more tempting. This sets the foundation for the many strategies to increase clients honesty and disclosure in session and elsewhere in their lives. This includes breaking the connection between ADHD and lying, managing emotional reactions, addressing unresolved disagreements, managing expectations, knowing when objective truth matters and doesnt, fixing a lie, making amends, and more. This will be useful for individual, couples and family therapy, for kids, teens, and adults.
