Course overview

Renal calculi, commonly referred to as kidney stones, are ubiquitous and persistent causing significant duress and pain, missed work and decreased productivity, and increased utilization of healthcare resources. Despite well-documented approaches to diagnosis and management of kidney stone disease (urolithiasis), including tested methods of prevention, this remains a common malady affecting many patients. Recent literature further underscores the discrepancies in evaluation and treatment based on socioeconomic status and race. With increasing prevalence and diverse etiologies, a thorough and updated understanding of effective management and prevention is warranted for all healthcare professionals. The dynamic landscape of stone formation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention is ever-evolving, promoting the importance of continuing education and interdisciplinary collaboration. Within this course, healthcare personnel will learn how to identify risk factors for nephrolithiasis, describe the process of diagnosing kidney stones, and understand approaches to treating and preventing kidney stones.
