All too often, clinicians are faced with a suicidal or self-harming young person in their office. The despair felt by these youth and their families is frequently palpable. Even the most competent professional can be left feeling overwhelmed and ill-prepared to offer guidance and hope. Therapists and other helping professionals can find it daunting to sort through the legal, clinical, ethical, and personal issues these serious challenges can bring up. In this presentation, Dr. Tony Shepard offers structure, understanding, and hope to professionals. It is only through gaining these for themselves that clinicians are able to show their clients the paths toward recovery. Through the strategies taught in this workshop, the professional can more easily guide youth and their families back to psychological health. Professionals learn key skills in understanding, assessing, and treating suicide and self-harm in a way that protects them and produces better outcomes for their clients.
