Course overview

Purpose: This course is great for the Nurses; LPN, RN who needs to learn or refresh their skills. Also an excellent guide for the Graduate Nurse who wants to build confidence and enhance skills to prepare for the workplace. This course was designed to provide through didactic, clinical instructions and training in venipuncture procedure. Didactic lectures cover the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system. The course will provide the healthcare worker/ professionals, students with an understanding of Phlebotomy, the reasons for Phlebotomy, review of integumentary system and how it relates to Phlebotomy. This course will also provide the student with knowledge relating to legal and professional standards, infection control, accidents/ incidents that can arise through venipuncture procedures and to teach the learner how to handle complications when they occur. This course will also provide hands on training in venipuncture techniques. The student will perform venipuncture technique /lab draws on manikins within the classroom/lab. This course has two sections: 20 hour home study (online) and 4 hour classroom section; for a total of 24 contact hours at the end of the program. Objectives/ Goals: After successful completion of this course the participants will be able to: 1.Describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system 2.Identify locations on the body appropriate for venipuncture 3.Describe proper safety precautions with relation to handling body fluids and blood 4.Describe how to prepare patients for venipuncture procedure. 5.Describe Patient identification procedures according to accepted guidelines 6.Describe appropriate bedside manner and how to prepare patient for procedure 7.Define infection control and appropriate precautions for handling body fluids and blood. 8.Describe venipuncture procedures using Vacutainer, butterfly and syringe. 9.Describe how to transfer blood into tubes after syringe collection 10.Demonstrate venipuncture collection procedures 11.Describe procedure for obtaining specimen via skin puncture technique 12.Explain procedures regarding lab requisitions, labeling and transporting specimen 13.Describe possible complications related to venipuncture, how to prevent and how to treat them. 14.Describe procedure for accidental needle stick injuries.
