CHILDREN EXPOSED TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: LEGAL TRENDS, RISK FACTORS, AND SAFETY CONCERN (2 CE)

Course overview

This course reviews the new research, policies, and programs focused on children who have witnessed adult domestic violence. In addition, it describes major legal and social trends surrounding custody and visitation decisions and the social science evidence supporting the need to consider domestic violence. Recommendations for custody and visitation decisions are explored. Learning Objectives: 1. Evaluate the research on the multiple experiences of children living in homes where an adult is using physically violent behavior in a pattern of coercion against an intimate partner 2. Assess the implications of laws relating to child exposure to adult domestic violence 3. Evaluate the research on parents who are at risk for physically and emotionally abusing children 4. Assess the implication of factors related to risk to the children and factors that compromise the safety of children and survivors
