Course overview

Hour 1 *Discuss the anatomy of errors in Healthcare (Part 1): Citing cases and the Duty of Care. *Identify the Duty of Care - Sidewalk consults, unpaid volunteer (e.g., team physician). *Identify breaches of Duty of Care. *Discuss Good Samaritan Acts. Hour 2 *Recognize potential high-risk diagnoses and refer to appropriate healthcare provider associated with coughing, Abdominal Pain, Chest Pain, etc. Hour 3 *Document thought processes. *Document shared decision making. *Document goals and expectations. *Dictate or type notes in the patient's presence. *Documenting referrals and their results can reduce liability risk, but referrals must be handled carefully. Hour 4 *Diagnose different types of scoliosis. *Recognize red flags for etiologies that need urgent evaluation and management and make appropriate referral. *Assess legal risks associated with a delay in the diagnosis. *Outline treatment options including monitoring and bracing. *Recognize limitations of the evidence for PT and adjustment. Hour 5 *Discuss the proper performance of a focused history involving spine injuries with children. *Examine spinal conditions in children. *Determine which imaging test if any for spine injuries in children. *Recognize red flags for spine injuries in children and make appropriate referrals. *Develop a collaborative approach for treatment of spine injuries in children. *Discuss the presentation of pediatric back pain. Hour 6 *Recognize the medical-legal risks of sport-related vascular injuries and make appropriate referrals. *Explain the dangerous anatomy of the vascular system. *Recognize red flags for sport injuries. *Develop an understanding of traumatic risks for vertebral artery dissection and make appropriate referrals. *Utilize informed consent. Hour 7 *Cite the history of our understanding of concussion. *Recognize the potential diagnosis of concussion and make appropriate referrals. *Identify red flags in concussion and make appropriate referrals. *Discuss the legal implications of sport-related concussion. Hour 8 *Identify conditions involving intrinsic conditions of the hip and pelvis. *Review history, symptoms, and physical findings with x-ray diagnosis including a list of differential diagnoses based on objective signs. *Advise on appropriate follow-up imaging and/or referrals. *Discuss common diagnostic errors with additional follow up examination. *Summarize treatment options for any given diagnostic condition learned. Hour 9 *Identify conditions which cause referred pain to the hip and pelvis. *Prescribe specific views, study, advance imaging, based on clinical presentation geared toward certain specific conditions. *Differentiate various diagnostic possibilities based on presenting clinical and objective radiographic evidence. *Evaluate the need for further imaging, biopsy, or other referrals. *Assess common diagnostic pitfalls, need for potential advanced imaging study, and second opinion. Hour 10 *Identify conditions which cause pain in the knees. *Evaluate lateral & medial knee pain. *Examine conditions causing central knee pain. *Analyze posterior knee pain. *Compare various diagnostic possibilities based on evaluation and consider the need for further imaging, biopsy or other referrals. Hour 11 *Evaluate conditions involving the lower leg and ankle. *Integrate history, symptoms, and physical findings with imaging studies. *Detect and describe all pertinent imaging signs of identified abnormalities. *Evaluate the need for advanced imaging study (with or without contrast) and/or specific examination selection (tangential view). *Recap diagnostic conditions and discuss treatment options of the lower leg and ankle. Hour 12 *Describe the basic anatomy of the ankle and the knee. *Discuss diagnostic imaging findings involving the ankle and knee. *Develop a list of differential diagnoses based on objective signs. *Differentiate and prioritize (rank) various diagnostic possibilities based on imaging studies.
