Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions of Americans annually, with the highest rates of hospitalization and death among the oldest age groups. In the United States in 2017, the leading causes of TBI-related hospitalizations were falls and motor vehicle crashes, while the leading causes of TBI-related deaths were suicide and falls. TBI imposes significant health, social, and economic costs. Limitations in current data collection lead to undercounting and underestimates of the true incidence and cost of TBI. his chapter reviews the scope and burden of traumatic brain injury (TBI), including the frequency of injury among segments of the global and U.S. populations. The chapter examines the economic cost of TBI and the potential for cost savings from improved care and outcomes. Finally, the chapter highlights themes reported by patients and families during the study information-gathering workshops with respect to the burden imposed by TBI.
