Course overview

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics reflects professional values and expectations for sound clinical practice. It encompasses ideas of duty, accountability, and responsibility and is designed to protect the professionals and those receiving their services. It is a guide for professionals to support their daily decision-making regarding professional conduct. High standards of ethical practice and principles are vital to the appropriate service delivery of speech-language pathologists who serve as clinicians, educators, researchers, administrators, and supervisors. A completely new rule was recently added to Principle IV of ASHA's Code of Ethics. This new rule addresses the ethical responsibilities of clinical supervisors for both graduate students and clinical fellows. The goal of this new rule is to ensure that appropriate and adequate supervision is provided and that all supervisory requirements are completed promptly.
