Course overview

Fractures of the hand and digits compose the highest incidence of upper extremity fractures, and account for 21% of all workplace hand injuries. These injuries can result in significant functional loss due to residual stiffness and pain. This course examines medical and surgical management as well as therapy strategies to protect, mobilize, and optimize functional outcomes. Therapeutic interventions through each of the phases of healing are demonstrated, as well as the use of orthoses to facilitate healing and restore digital motion and functional use. This course is applicable to occupational and physical therapists working in outpatient and inpatient settings, with patients with hand and digital fractures in all phases of treatment, as well as to therapists looking for intervention and orthosis strategies to maximize outcomes.
