Early intervention refers to a set of interventions that support and provide resources for families of special needs infants and toddlers 0 to 3 years old. Services covered within this programme can include physiotherapy occupational therapy speech therapy amongst many others. The term 'early intervention' encompasses early diagnosis and an early start to fostering cognitive communication and motor development. Research has shown that early intervention is most effective when it is family-centred in the child's natural environment and when the family and therapists work collaboratively to select goals and plan interventions. Empowering families in the decision-making process begins with the assessment. This course will discuss family-centred care and three different assessment tools that have the best predictive validity for detecting cerebral palsy.
