As with any new skill learning to stand takes hours of practice. Infants must repeat the task and explore different ways of achieving their desired outcome. Achieving independent standing requires persistence repeated experience of success as well as repeated failures. There are three phases of learning to stand: learning to support the body weight on the lower limbs with support from a caregiver; standing and stepping with hand support; standing independently and early walking.
